VariablesI am outside my building as I am most days during my lunch break. The air holds a sting of cold that’s brought up by the occasional breeze. A flock of pigeons descends and ascends from time to time along the street. The streets feel empty despite the rumbling of traffic, and I am on a bench with a book which I’m doing a poor job of getting absorbed into. I notice a small girl. She’s small in size, not age. She looks at me sideways and I invite her to sit with me. I scoot towards the side of the bench away from her, trying to make the concrete slab look inviting. She edges in nervously.
